There was non-stop entertainment all day including guitarists, bands, hula hoop girls and of course, Nelson’s own Kapa Haka group, ’Te Manauraraiti’ – a whanau performance group specialising in Maori performing arts.  A perfect way to celebrate Waitangi weekend!

How Can Nelson City Retailers & Businesses Get Involved?

Purple Cake Day enjoyed fabulous support from the Nelson retail and business community last year and we hope that Nelson City businesses will make this year even bigger and better!  Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Display a Purple Cake Day poster ahead of the big day: choose from different versions – all credit to Daniel Allen Photography, Revell Design and Speedy Print.
  • Support your staff to have some fun and wear something purple and/or hold a gold coin cupcake or purple morning tea on 1 March.
  • Dress your shop window in purple for the week (25 Feb-3 March) and win prizes
  • put one of our Dotty Donation Boxes on your counter.
  • Nominate a purple item or items in your shop.  If it sells on 1 March or that week, donate a part of the sale price to Purple Cake Day.
  • If you sell food, sell purple food – cupcakes, cakes, biscuits – and donate part of the proceeds to Purple Cake Day projects.

Uniquely Nelson will support participating businesses through its advertising and promotional activities and drive customer involvement and donations. So if you would like to do one or more of these Purple Cake Day activities, please confirm your involvement by clicking on the attached link: Purple Cake Day Retail Involvement

Chamber of Commerce Workshops

Isn’t it great that we all have the gift of the gab, are able to work a room and make long term fulfilling business relationships every time we step into a room of people! We wish…  On top of that our handshake sends all the wrong messages.  Networking as a business activity is sometimes left to chance but with some preparation and commitment it can be fun and rewarding.

These were the topics of a workshop presented in November by Stephen Caunter of the ANZ National Bank.  Held at the Suburban Club the room was overflowing with a diverse range of local business owners all of whom rated the workshop highly.  A good number ended up with follow up to do so there is the expectation that this will lead to new business!

So with the success of this workshop we are once again delighted to have Stephen’s services presenting the following workshops.

Small Business Training Courses – for FREE!

In a world where education is often the deciding factor for personal success, there’s one Nelson based business that’s doing its part to provide an edge for people wanting to get ahead.

The Barbican Training Centre, in partnership with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, is in its eighth year offering training programmes for business owners and staff in the Nelson and Marlborough regions. Programmes are designed to help students succeed on their chosen path – and all for FREE.

Just some of the training programmes on offer include:

  • Certificate in Computing
  • Certificate in Money Management
  • Certificate in Small Business Management
  • Certificate in Applied Small Business Growth & Development

Tutor and Barbican Director, Susan Piket says, “It’s not just about passing exams, these programmes are designed to really move students towards a better way of life. Over the years, many have started up their own businesses, some have grown existing businesses, while others have overhauled their personal finances.”

Most people are juggling work, business and home life so our programmes are designed to suit busy people. “I am so grateful for the chance to learn so much, while still being able to work and support my family”, says Janine Smith a former graduate of the Small Business Management programme. “The results I have achieved in my business, never would have happened without the knowledge and support I have gained.”
